How to Properly Brew Your Whole Leaf Tea

If you're an avid tea-lover, you probably know that whole leaf tea lends a far superior cup than pre-bagged tea.  Much of the store bought single-serve tea is comprised of leaves that were broken or cut during the harvesting process, and the rest was intentionally cut up to fit inside the tiny little bag.  Whole leaf tea is just that - beautiful, unadulterated, full leaves that incorporate every speck of flavor that the tea plant itself intended.  You're not missing out on any of the wonderful taste when you choose whole leaf teas.

Brewing tea is a fundamentally simple process, but deserves careful attention and knowledge to yield the best-tasting cup. In order to properly brew whole leaf teas, 4 important factors can make or break your tea-drinking experience.
  1. The quality of the leaves.  It's crucial if you want a superb tea experience.  When you choose whole leaf teas from Harvest Cafe Coffee, you can trust that you're choosing the highest quality tea leaves from around the globe.
  2. The quality of the water. The quality of water you use is just as important as the quality of your tea leaves. Fresh, filtered and well-oxygenated water is a must.  Water that is bottled, distilled, has been previously boiled, or has boiled for a while will not incorporate enough oxygen to unleash the complex, full flavor of your premium tea.  Water fresh from the tap and immediately filtered is the best water to use.
  3. The temperature of the water.  The temperature should be just right for each variety of tea, and is very closely related to the 4th important factor:
  4. Brew timing.  See the chart below to discover tried and true temperature and timing guides for brewing the perfect pot of tea.

Now that you know the basics of brewing whole leaf tea, a few simple supplies are necessary.Teapot  You'll need a pot to boil the water in, a good teapot for brewing the tea, and something to strain the loose tea leaves through when the brewing process is finished.  Many teapots come with built-in infusers or basket strainers.  The best rule of thumb is to make sure that your whole leaf tea has enough room to unfurl during the brewing process, as the leaves will expand in the hot water.  Many basket infusers do not allow enough room for this process to properly occur, but they are still useful in straining out the leaves.

With your knowledge and tea-brewing supplies, now it's time to brew that tea!  The first step is to warm your teapot with a flush of hot water, which keeps the tea from cooling down too quickly during the brew process.  Next, boil the water, and use it immediately when it comes to the temperature necessary to brew the particular variety of tea you are using.  Place the whole tea leaves in the teapot and pour the hot water over the leaves.  Steep the leaves according to the time chart provided, and remove the leaves immediately or strain all the water into teacups to drink.  The last step is to enjoy your premium whole leaf tea.  It's good for you, it's soothing, and it will leave you feeling refreshed!

Coffee Tip
Don't open your gourmet coffee and then save the rest for later - drink it while it's fresh!  Over time, air causes your premium coffee to oxidize and lose its freshness.  When you purchase freshly roasted coffee to enjoy, make sure to enjoy it within 2-4 weeks after opening the package!
