Steam and Froth Milk Without Fancy Equipment

Do you want to make cafe-inspired coffee beverages at home, but don't want to spend the money on expensive machines that take up valuable space in your kitchen?  It's possible to brew up your own daily special using your favorite Harvest Cafe Coffee and a few simple tools to create frothy, steamed milk.

Before you begin, it's important to know that most coffee house specialties are created using espresso.  If you don'tWhisk have an espresso machine or a stovetop moka pot, you can use regular coffee that has been brewed double-strong in a pinch.

So grab some cold milk, a small saucepan and a loose wired whisk.

  1. Fill the saucepan with the desired amount of cold milk
  2. Heat the saucepan over medium to medium-high heat, while beating the milk with the whisk.
  3. As you continue to beat the milk, wide bubbles will begin to form.
  4. As the temperature and beating speed increases, the volume of the bubbles will begin to swell.  Be careful not to bring the milk to a boil, or your froth will disintegrate.
  5. Just before the milk reaches the boiling point, remove it from from the heat and continue to whisk until the froth doubles in size. Your froth is now ready to be used in your favorite specialty coffee recipe!

Coffee is Beneficial in your Garden

The benefits of composting are endless.  Composting is organic, it reduces waste, and it adds valuable nutrients to your soil to naturally boost your garden and lawn.  Did you know that used coffee grounds are an excellent addition to your garden and compost pile?  Another byproduct ofCoffee Chaff coffee that makes rich compost material is chaff—a light "skin" that is expelled from the coffee bean during the roasting process.

Both coffee grounds and chaff contain extremely helpful nutrients, the main component of which is nitrogen, along with phosphorus and potassium.  Adding them to your garden or compost pile that help speed the growth of your plants, and tomatoes respond particularly well to coffee-enriched soil.  Tomatoes appreciate the extra nitrogen boost, and coffee also helps suppress late blight.

Coffee grounds and chaff also assist in the decomposition process for your compost, too.  Coffee products in your composter tend to reach higher temperatures more rapidly than other organic materials.  If your concerned about pesticides that may have been used on the coffee plants, rest assured that any residues are burned off at nearly 500 degrees F during the roasting process.

One of the most interested qualities of coffee when used in the garden is it's ability to attract Used Coffee Groundshelpful visitors and repell unwanted pests and garden bandits!  Worms absolutely love coffee, so you can expect to increase your worm population handsomely when you treat them to the morning's leftovers.  Worms are beneficial in the garden because they aerate the soil, aid in decomposition, and the waste they excrete contains nutrients beneficial to your plants.  On the other hand, ants, snails, slugs, cats, and even possibly squirrels simply hate coffee.  You can protect your plants from the damage these typical garden pests create by placing a protective ring around the base of the stem.

When adding coffee chaff, be mindful not to overdo it.  Chaff possesses water repellent qualities and can sometimes get thick and sticky when wet.  Added in the right amount, it is very beneficial to your gardening ventures.  If you would like to start using chaff in your garden, give us a call at (317) 585-9162!  We typically have plenty of it on hand and would be happy to supply your needs for free on a first-come first-serve basis.

Coffee Tip
Choose coffee packed in valve-sealed bags.  Valve-sealed bags let out the gases emitted by the natural degassing process after the beans are freshly roasted - but they don't let any air into the package. Vaccuum packed coffee is coffee that has been degassed prior to packaging, resulting in coffee that is not as fresh as it could be.
